Etymology[edit]

From Middle Englishussher, uscher, usscher, from Anglo-Normanusser and Old Frenchussier, uissier(porter, doorman) (compare Frenchhuissier), from Vulgar Latin*ustiārius(doorkeeper), from Latinōstiārius, from ōstium(door). Akin to ōs(mouth). Probably a doublet of ostiary and huissier.
