Etymology[edit]

From Middle Englishussher, uscher, usscher, from Anglo-Normanusser and Old Frenchussier, uissier(“porter, doorman”) (compare Frenchhuissier), from Vulgar Latin*ustiārius(“doorkeeper”), from Latinōstiārius, from ōstium(“door”). Akin to ōs(“mouth”). Probably a doublet of ostiary and huissier.
