1) Control panel change 'view by' to 'small icons' click 'Mouse' (Can't find any settings that allows me to change scrolling direction) 2) Type 'Mouse & touchpad settings' on start menu under the 'mouse & touchpad' tab, I can't find settings here. All my other folders still scroll across by the way, with the scrollbar at the bottom, so this wasn't a global change - just for this folder. I also tried copying a folder which scrolls horizontally, deleting the files in it and moving the files from the 'nuisance' folder into it, but that causes the folder to change to scrolling vertically!!

The trackpad on the Touch and Type Covers for the Microsoft Surface with Windows RT implements the increasingly popular reverse scrolling direction, which is nice for some people and extremely irritating for others. Thankfully, those in the latter group don’t have to live with it. While I have, for the most part, gotten used to scrolling in the opposite direction, Microsoft actually provides a way to change this with the Trackpad Settings app.

Compatible only with the Surface, the Trackpad Settings app allows you to flip the scrolling direction, as well as enable or disable scrolling, tap gestures, or even the entire trackpad in general. The app is limited to only these four options, but many people are sure to find it invaluable.

Some people might experience a minor issue where the app cannot detect the Touch/Type Cover, but there’s a relatively simple fix:

  1. Make sure you have the latest updates: From the Start screen, type Update, tap Settings, then tap Check for updates.
  2. From the Start screen, type Devices, tap Settings, then tap Devices and Printers. Then tap Refresh three times (circular arrow next to Search box). Try using the app again.

I am regularly switching between OSX and Window7 and I kind of got used to the new scrolling direction introduced with OSX 10.7 (Lion).

Therefore I thought it would be nice to have this scrolling consistent across both platforms.

Looking for a way to reverse the scrolling direction on Window 7 I found this solution on superuser.com (http://superuser.com/questions/310681/inverting-direction-of-mouse-scroll-wheel):

  1. Find the hardware ID of the mouse

    • Go to the mouse control panel
    • Select “Hardware” tab
    • Click “Properties” button
    • Select “Details” tab
    • From the drop-down list choose “Hardware IDs”
    • Save the VID*** entry ( e.g. VID_045E&PID_0039 )
  2. Find and change the corresponding configuration settings in the registry

    • Run regedit.exe
    • Open Key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetEnumHID
    • Here you should find an entry for the hardware ID of your mouse
    • In all sub-keys of the hardware id key look for the “DeviceParameters” key and change the “FlipFlopWheel” value from 0 to 1
  3. Make it work

    • Unplug the mouse
    • Count to five :-)
    • Plug the mouse back in
